The monastery is buzzing with joy and gratitude for “Habemus Papam.” As we have grieved Pope Francis’ passing and then began looking toward the conclave, we were longing for the white smoke and those consoling words: Habemus Papam. For us, here in Arizona, the white smoke billowed out of the chimney shortly after our daily Mass. Like the rest of the world – Catholic and non-Catholic alike – we rushed to the television.

Rev. Mother Marie Andre and Sr. Marie St. Paul, our Mother Vicar, were the first to see the white smoke and thus began the relay to alert all the Nuns! How fitting that this happened during the Easter season…we felt a bit like Peter and John as they ran to the empty tomb! We ran to the television in our calefactory (community room) where we would await the announcement that “Habemus Papam.” Truly this was a little taste of the joy of the Resurrection.
What a great privilege it was to see Pope Leo XIV walk onto the Balcony at St. Peter’s in real time, united with him and the entire Church in that moment. We rejoice with great joy that “Habemus Papam” – and a Pope who was born right here in the United States of America. Join us in giving thanks to Our Lord for the gift of the Papacy and for the gift of Pope Leo XIV. And let us be unflagging in our prayers for him!
Vive Il Papa!
“In a particular way, God has called me by your election to succeed the Prince of the Apostles, and has entrusted this treasure to me so that, with his help, I may be its faithful administrator (cf. 1 Cor 4:2) for the sake of the entire mystical Body of the Church. He has done so in order that she may be ever more fully a city set on a hill (cf. Rev 21:10), an ark of salvation sailing through the waters of history and a beacon that illumines the dark nights of this world. And this, not so much through the magnificence of her structures or the grandeur of her buildings – like the monuments among which we find ourselves – but rather through the holiness of her members.”
