It’s is time for another Reading Reverie Book Review! I can hardly believe that I have not yet reviewed this book, WRAP Yourself in Scripture. For the last 3 or 4 years, it has been my constant companion. I carry it with me to Eucharistic Adoration each day, as well as having it by my side each day as I enter into Lectio Divina. I’ve read it cover to cover about 3 times, and I now use it almost daily as a point of reference.
For years, Lectio Divina (prayerful reading of Scripture) was a constant point of challenge for me. After reading in-depth instruction after more in-depth instruction on how to ‘lectio, meditatio, oratio, contemplatio’ – I was rather discouraged. Meeting Our Lord in the Scripture seemed beyond my grasp…though the desire grew and grew.
Then, I came across this tiny little book. The authors (Karen and Lawrence Dwyer) present a method of Lectio Divina that follows the traditional steps (in a very simple and approachable way), as well teaching how to journal your Scripture journey. Reading these 52 brief pages – full of great quotes, simple straightforward instructions, examples, tips, and lots of extras, (and with the grace of God!) – I fell in love with Scripture. I began to experience the power of the Word of God, and miracle of miracles, I heard His Word speaking to me! Now the prayerful reading of Scripture is like air for my spiritual lungs!
WRAP is an acronym for a guided method of reading, reflecting on, and praying Holy Scripture. As noted in the intro of the book, ‘The goal of WRAP is to foster a personal encounter and conversation with Jesus Christ through the Scriptures.’ And, at least in my own experience, that goal was reached in a marvelous way!
If you desire a deeper relationship with the Lord through the Scriptures, then I encourage you to order this book. Make a commitment to spend time being “WRAP”ped in God’s love each day! I’d love to hear if you find it helpful as well.
You can order it for about $6 on Amazon – WRAP Yourself in Scripture
