“Let the Brown Scapular be your sign of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary…in these perilous times.”
-Ven. Pope Pius XII

On July 16th, 1251, St. Simon Stock, received a visit from Our Lady in answer to his prayers. She imparted to him the Brown Scapular and thus began this beautiful devotion.

The Brown Scapular is a sacramental of the Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that sacramentals “do not confer the grace of the Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do, but by the Church’s prayer, they prepare us to receive grace and dispose us to cooperate with it.”

The Congregation for Divine Worship explains that the Brown Scapular is “an external sign of the filial relationship established between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel, and the faithful who entrust themselves totally to her protection, who have recourse to her maternal intercession, who are mindful of the primacy of the spiritual life and the need for prayer.”
